Preparing for Your New British Shorthair Kitten | Coastal Charm British Shorthairs

Your Shopping Checklist Before Homecoming

Bringing home a new kitten is exciting, and a little preparation goes a long way toward helping them settle into their new home.

To make Homecoming Day as stress-free as possible, we've put together a simple checklist of the essentials you'll want to have ready before your Coastal Charm kitten arrives.

Don't worry—you don't have to buy everything at once or purchase the most expensive products. Your kitten needs a safe, comfortable environment filled with love more than anything else.

Essentials

  • Food bowl (stainless steel or ceramic; wide and/or low-sided to avoid whisker fatigue)

  • Water bowl or cat water fountain

  • Litter box

  • Scoop

  • Litter (your kitten has been using tofu)

  • Kitten food that offers “complete” nutrition

  • Scratching post (your kitten is accustomed to corrugated cardboard pads)

Comfort

  • Soft cat bed

  • Cozy blanket

  • Carrier (hard-sided or sturdy soft-sided for pick-up and vet visits)

  • Cat tree or climbing tower

Toys & Enrichment

  • Wand toy

  • Soft plush toys

  • Balls or mice

  • Puzzle feeder

  • Cat tunnel

Health & Grooming

  • Nail clippers

  • Soft slicker brush

  • Pet-safe toothbrush (optional)

  • Enzymatic toothpaste for cats (optional)

Kitten-Proof Your Home

  • Secure loose electrical cords

  • Remove toxic plants

  • Store medications safely

  • Put away string, ribbon, and rubber bands

  • Check that windows and screens are secure

  • Create a quiet “safe room” for the first few days

Nice-to-Have Items

  • Window perch

  • Interactive treat puzzle

  • Automatic water fountain

  • Extra scratching post/pad

What You Don't Need to Buy

Your Coastal Charm kitten will go home with:

❤️ A blanket carrying the scent of mom and littermates

❤️ A sample of the food they're currently eating

❤️ Favorite toys

❤️ Health records

❤️ Registration paperwork

❤️ A written health guarantee

❤️ Microchip

❤️ Care instructions

These familiar items help make the transition into your home much easier.

Our Favorite Tip

Resist the urge to let your kitten explore the entire house on the first day.

Instead, prepare one quiet room with food, water, a litter box, a bed, and a few toys. This gives your kitten a safe place to adjust before gradually exploring the rest of your home over the next several days.

A calm introduction builds confidence and helps your kitten feel secure from the very beginning.
